The general elections will be held in Sudan in mid March amid rejection of the electoral law regulating the election processes and frank and urgent demands by various political sides to change this law.

The General Elections:

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Sudan, which is the main partner in the National Unity Government, has fixed Mid May 2008 as the date for the holding of its general congress in the presence of 2,500 members as part of the preparations for the upcoming general elections.

The Electoral law:

The meeting of the National Commission for the Constitutional Review in Sudan was postponed in order to approve the outstanding items in the draft electoral law because the two main partners in the government, namely, the National Congress Party and the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Sudan, did not meet. The meeting was due to be held in February 2008. The various political forces insisted that agreement should be reached on a democratic law for the elections so as it could be submitted to parliament for approval.
